Grinding fun with a $60K stump grinder

You will know from reading my blogs that I am not really a machine guy. I prefer soft landscaping with plants. But seeing a huge $60,000 stump grinder in action was a lot of fun.

Again, the advice I offer to all aspiring landscape professionals is to know and experience everything. Everything! And that includes machines.

The mother of all stump grinders

One machine you are bound to run into is a stump grinder. If you were ever asked to dig up a tree stump with hand tools you will appreciate this labour saving monster.

This was my first encounter with a large $60,000 stump grinder. I have seen smaller machines before. Unlike those smaller machines this huge monster is controlled by a remote controller which has one huge advantage. The operator can watch the grinder from the front where the stump is about to be obliterated.

Safety

Operator safety is assumed. Ear, head and eye protection is mandatory. As are steel toe boots. Also, another important element is temporary canvas fencing to protect windows and passersby from flying objects. On this particular sites we also had to watch the newly constructed metal railing. The boss was sweating a little bit as the monster crawled into position dangerously close to the new railing.

Why we stump grind

Why stump grind? Because some projects don’t allow for the presence of tree stumps. Like our project. Since the plan is to install turf blend soil and hydroseed, the stumps would have been in the way of our new lawn area.

Plus, the labour costs associated with digging up the stumps with hand tools would have been prohibitive, And also unappetizing.

After picture. We raked out the area and eventually this will be a lawn.

If your project involves the removal of several large tree stumps, consider hiring a stump grinder. It will save you money on labour costs. It will also add colour to your work day when the metal beast starts crawling throughout your site.
