Holidays for biophiliacs

Today was a glorious sunny Monday Family Day holiday in British Columbia. Normally I would work for half a day but, since it’s winter, I actually took some time for my kids.

Play

We dusted off our bikes, pumped up the tires and went out to join my daughter’s friends for a bike ride around the Inlet. Eventually we ended up at Old Orchard Park where we ditched the bikes. Then, two things happened. All four kids ran away to enjoy unstructured play in the sun with trees and beach close by. Perfect. Just the way I like it.

As for me, I found a nearby bench and shamelessly claimed it for myself. I also put away my smartphone (3% power) and closed my eyes. I don’t know how long I was there soaking up the sun but it was exactly what I needed.

Vas looking for fascination.

Biophiliac

This break on the bench gave me a chance to think about the book I am currently reading: “The biophilia effect” by Clemens G Arvay, released on February 1, 2018. I bought it in e-book format to save money.

Biophilia isn’t a new idea. It refers to humans needing and craving nature because we are part of it. But what’s new is the science related to biophilia. When I go out to the park I feel good. Most people do. But now it turns out the park visit is also good for our bodies. I will review the book once I finish it.

Fascination

I like the interesting idea of directed attention versus fascination. Your attention is directed at your work place, for example. Your boss makes lots of demands on you, e-mails and phone calls come your way; you have to pay attention in boring meetings and then you have to face your stressful commute home. All of this directed attention can drain you physically and mentally.

You can experience fascination in nature. Take my sunny view from the park bench today. I took in the Pacific Ocean with a small sandy beach; and towering over me were cedar trees. In these moments you can experience fascination, which is relaxing.

The slow bike ride to Menchie’s was also nice and our fascination continued as we filled up our cups with frozen yogurt.

Next time you go out into nature, see what fascinates you and enjoy it!
