Just before Christmas, I received a thank you e-mail from Quora.com, thanking me for making their site a success. If you’ve never heard of Quora.com, then all you need to know is that it’s a site where you can ask any question and someone will answer it for you. Hopefully, that special someone is an expert with the appropriate background.
Upvoting
When you like an answer, you have the option of upvoting it. That’s when a writer like me looks good. In 2019, I had written over 330 answers and gotten 151 upvotes. Overall, my answers had 6,100 views this year. Of course, it’s not a race. I only answer interesting questions, when I can. I’m a busy man.
Most upvoted
My most upvoted answer was for this question: “How should I mulch my tree?”
Here’s the full answer.
- Create a deep edge around it first: tree well. Use an edging shovel and make it ninety degrees. Remove any excess soil.
- Then install mulch; free arbor chips are best but whatever you get, make sure it’s at least 3 inches deep so it will keep moisture in and deprive weeds of sunlight. Thin mulch just helps weeds thrive. You can expect most mulches to settle over time.
- DO NOT pile any mulch against the trunk. Locate the root flare: trunk/root zone and make sure it’s not covered by mulch. The install should look like a donut. Do NOT create a volcano look because your trunk will rot or invite disease in as it gets moist.
Why do it?
Why answer questions on Quora? Because by teaching others you learn. And learning should never stop. It also feels good to help others.
Plus, there is a another upside. Questions that repeat on Quora, sometimes give birth to new blog posts. And who knows, my Quora answers might one day be assembled into an eBook.
If you have a burning landscape question, visit Quora.com and ask away.
