How to deep-edge rubber mulched beds

Deep-edging is a good winter time activity. Bed edges can look tired at the end of the year and, sometimes, they’re completely obliterated. So, it’s now to touch them before the mow season hits.

Winter time is relatively slower and having nice, deep edges makes it easier for line and blade edging work.

Basic deep-edging

In basic deep-edging you use an edging shovel with a flat bottom to re-establish the edge in a few easy steps:

  1. Stick the edging shovel in at precisely ninety degrees
  2. Place your foot behind the shovel blade
  3. Give it a kick to dislodge unwanted soil or grass but don’t fling it too far
  4. Pick-up any grass chunks
  5. Rake the edged area clean

Now, I did this last week, almost on autopilot. But then I got to a yard mulched with rubber bits. It wouldn’t be my first choice but, hey, it’s their yard. Not mine.

Deep-edging at 90 degrees.

Extra step

Because the bed edge is covered in rubber mulch, we can’t just mess it up with grass chunk as we deep-edge the basic way. There is an extra step we must take. Some find it annoying but we don’t have much choice.

Before you deep-edge, you must take these steps:

  1. Rake away the rubber mulch to make room for your edging debris, like grass chunks.
  2. Deep-edge with the five steps I showed you above.
  3. Remove any excess soil and try to re-use it close by. Excess soil is often generated when we deep-edge tree wells.
  4. Carefully pull back the rubber mulch.

I will never forget a young worker, plugging away for a competitor. They got him to deep-edge a freshly bark mulched site and he did it like a robot. Soon, the fresh bark mulch was covered in soil and grass chunks because he wasn’t trained properly. He had to rake away the edge mulch first. So, I walked over and gently reminded him.

  1. Rubber mulch

2. Rubber mulch raked away and bed deep-edged

3. Rubber mulch put back. The soil is sandy and not great for deep edges.

Conclusion

It’s important to have properly deep-edged beds because it gives them definition and makes it easier for lawn edging. But be careful with mulched beds. When you deep edge mulched beds, you must make room first by raking away the mulch from the edge.

It’s an extra step but it’s critical. If you skip it, you will mess up the mulch with soil and grass debris.
