Why now?
Tomorrow I will vote in federal elections and I’m not even sure why, considering the current government is only half way through the four year term. We’re spending money and voting during a pandemic. It’s seems a bit suspicious.
Now, I’m not a fan of our Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. His good looks and privilege are annoying enough, but I find the whole affair with Jody Wilson-Raybould extremely off-putting. It’s clear she was asked not to press with criminal charges against a corrupt Canadian corporation. Then she was pushed out.
Her recently released memoir “Indian in the cabinet” might be the first book on politics I will buy and, most likely, finish.
So, tomorrow after work I will put my mask on, bring my own pen and walk across the street to the polling station. There I will vote for my local Liberal candidate.
The key issue: climate change
There are many issues to worry about but, for me, climate change is the biggest one. And, while I detest Trudeau, it’s obvious that the Liberal climate policy is not only the best one, it’s also well entrenched. Especially regarding carbon off-sets.
The Liberals are putting a price on carbon, they’re planning for a nice percentage of new cars sold to be electric, and they’re finally planning to plant new trees across Canada.
Speaking of trees, it will take many years for the new seedlings to suck up carbon. I will be long dead before that happens. And yet, I love the idea.
First, we need to produce new seedlings, then get people to plant them, and make sure they survive. According to my local Liberal candidate, the seedlings are being produced as I write this blog post. He actually took the time to visit my home and talk about it. And tomorrow he will get my vote.
Incidentally, the riding I live in, was the closest race of the last election. It was a close contest between the Liberals, PC and NDP. I wouldn’t be surprised if the same thing happened tomorrow.
According to an article in the Globe and Mail, if your main concern is the climate emergency, vote Liberal. I believe everything I read.
