My kind of guy
It might seem like a serious departure for my blogs to turn to a British novelist from Victorian England. But Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) was my kind of guy. In serious need of money and life direction, he became a civil servant with the postal service and he stayed there for a very long time. And judging from his autobiography- free download for Audible members!- he did a decent job as a civil servant.
What I love is that Trollope had a burning ambition to write novels. So he did it and he left behind a huge catalog. This past week I read his first serious success called “The Warden“. It’s a comment on the church the way it was in the 1800s. By far the best part was his hilarious take on the power of the press. I laughed out loud. Because Trollope was a good novelist, there is plenty of tension in the novel. I also love the old British English.
He was a true side-hustler and I wish I could have known him.
How he did it
Now, how did he do it you may wonder? As as pro blogger I definitely wondered. Trollope worked a full-time job and published many novels, eventually earning more money from his writing than from his day job. He pulled it off with great discipline. Rising early in the morning he wrote the same number of words every day before going to work. That’s the kind of discipline I need so I can publish my blogs consistently.
Trollope also plugged away even when his early work wasn’t great. He didn’t quit which would make Grant Cardone super happy. Keep on practicing your craft and good things will happen. As long as you don’t quit.
I openly admit that many of my blog posts are marginal at best but I’m not quitting. And I’m working on new editions of my e-books; and planning my first audio version.
If you’re working a side-hustle or two and need some inspiration, get to know Anthony Trollope, the original side-hustler. And while you’re at it, enjoy one of his many novels.
