World naked gardening day

Gardening and fun

Earlier, when I wrote my blog post on fun and gardening I wasn’t thinking about gardening in the nude. World Naked Gardening Day sounds ridiculous and this is a family blog. It always sounded dangerous, running around naked in the garden with tools and prickly shrubs around.

But after seeing several photos posted on Twitter, I’ve changed my mind. The naked gardeners in the photos look like they’re having fun and staying safe. Yes, gardening really is fun.

Body-shamed

As a veteran visitor of many Japanese hots springs, I’m fairly comfortable getting naked with strangers. But it took some getting used to. All men get a small towel to cover their privates as they move from the change rooms to the baths. In my case, the towels were clearly too small but I managed. Note that in Japan the small towels don’t go in the hot bath, they stay outside; some men put them on their heads but it isn’t very cool.

But now that I’m in my early fifties, my wife constantly subjects me to body-shaming. Wrongly, of course! I blame any slippage on forced self-isolation.

If I survive the pandemic, I will consider participating in next year’s World Naked Gardening Day. I will do anything for a new blog post. And to prove my wife wrong.

Beautiful and fun

Pruning “bushes.” (Disclaimer: photo used with permission.)

This is what appeared in my Twitter feed (@VasS2015, #landscapeproVas) and inspired this blog post. The lovely gardener is pruning bushes on World Naked Gardening Day and she’s clearly enjoying her time in the garden. Like we all do, with or without clothes. And she’s beautiful just like her garden plants.

Are you in?

As I write this blog post, I feel like I missed out on some serious fun in the garden. I hope to participate in next year’s World Naked Gardening Day and cross it off my live-it list. What about you? Are you in?
