This year my birthday felt a bit strange because my family is out of the country. So I had to supply my own gifts and I had some extra time to do it because my boss generously let me go home early. Early enough for it to feel like a nice gift of time.
RONA
Instead of heading to the mall to buy things I didn’t need, I drove to my local RONA where I discovered soil bags on sale for $3.90. Bingo, one item off my to do list.
Of course, it’s a long walk from the soil section to the cashier and it goes right through the plant section. Just the way the people behind “Plant something BC” like it. And I’m very weak when I see cheap plants for sale. I knew I would pick something up and I did. Happy Birthday!!
Patio pots
Normally I only buy perennials because they keep on growing and because I need to practice perennial species names. There are many species and varieties and cultivars to know.
I broke my own rule by purchasing six marigolds just because I wanted some brighter colours on my patio.
One pot I created was planted with three full sun plants. Festuca ovina ‘Elijah Blue’ is a baby blue fescue grass. I know the grass from my work sites and I love the silver-blue foliage. Then I added two new friends, Sisyrinchium californicum ‘Yellow Stone’ or Yellow-Eyed Grass.
Personally I find yellows very warm and I can’t wait for this grass-like perennial to pop its yellow star-like flowers. This perennial is the key lesson of this blog. I feel like I accomplished something by learning about a new perennial.
The last pot was planted for my kids with strawberries. I also took some of the seeds I collected last year and I planted them just to see if any of them will pop.
I finished by top-dressing most of my pots with new soil and watering.
Now it’s your turn. Plant something BC!
