arborist notes tools trees

Slingshot fun

Some days in the field become really fun when routine and monotony are replaced by something new. While I was busy pruning in a wild zone, I was thinking about possible topics for my blog. Then my boss interrupted me with a pressing emergency. Great! Now what?

Problem

It was a blustery day in White Rock and high up in a Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) we had a large broken branch. It was stuck high up on a lower branch and right over a walkway. The site manager was worried -correctly- and called us in. Calling arborists out for an emergency can you set you back $800. It’s cheaper if your landscapers can pull it off. If.

Practice

A new slingshot costs just under $200. It attaches to Stihl pole pruners. That’s the easy part. Actually using it properly requires practice. So we hit a local park and practiced. The instructions suggested leaving the line loosely set in a tarp. In practice it wasn’t so easy. The line got tangled more than once.

Action

After practice we headed for the tree. Slingshots are normally used by climbing arborists to get their ropes into trees and thus facilitate climbing. Since I am a non-climbing arborist, this was new to me! Which is why this whole activity was a lot of fun.

This heavy bag can fly!

Some of our shots were too low; others overshot the target branch. Some shots never really took flight because the string tangled. When we finally hit the correct branch, the idea was to pull hard and dislodge the offending broken branch. So we pulled and broke off the end tip of the branch hosting the offender; the offender refused to move!

Eventually we ran out of time and day light and had to push the mission to next week. I can’t wait.

  1. With havin so much content and articles do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or copyright infringement? My website has a lot of unique content I’ve either created myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my permission. Do you know any solutions to help prevent content from being stolen? I’d really appreciate it.

    1. There are editors on the web paid to steal other people’s content. Aside from copyright graphics, I cant see how you can prevent people from stealing. I don’t care. I will re-purpose the best stuff into e-books.
